About the Language

Persian is an Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It is mainly spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Bahrain and also in surrounding areas; it has official-language status in the first three countries under different names.

Why Learn Persian?

Persian is an important language of the Middle East and Central Asia. It is the official language of Iran, spoken by about 55% of the population. The Persian language has been a medium for literary and scientific contributions to the Islamic world as well as the Western. Knowing Persian provides an entry into a rich and diverse culture that produced major epic and Sufi poets, exquisite miniature painting, fine carpets and world-class films. It also has a good job opportunity as it is the language of government, the media, and school instruction.

Farsi is an introduction to Modern Farsi (Persian). The course covers the phonology and the fundamentals of Farsi syntax with conversational proficiency as the primary goal. Students learn to read and write the Farsi alphabet and gain proficiency. By the end of this course, students are expected to be able to greet others appropriately and to participate in basic conversations of everyday activities. Topics include simple sentence structure, interrogatives, and personal pronouns, expressions of time and season, and present and past verb tenses.
