About the Language

Grouped as the westernmost member of the Malayo-Polynesian branch of Austronesian family of languages, Malagasy is spoken by the people of Madagascar as a first language and by other people of Malagasy descent. This language has some influence of Arabic, French and Bantu languages (Swahili) in it. Moreover, it also has a rich tradition of oral and poetic histories and legends.

Why Learn Malagasy?

Malagasy, also known as Malgache, is spoken in the island of Madagascar. It has many influences from mainland African languages, in particular Bantu languages, Swahili, and Arabic, also from English and French. Malagasy language has a soft, musical quality somewhat reminiscent of Italian. Madagascar being the fourth largest island has a beautiful landscape which acts as a tourist attraction spot. Knowing the language also inlets a deep understanding of the country’s amazing culture, food, place, traditions and its people.
