About the Language
Why Learn Dutch?
LEVEL 1:
The main aim of this course is to help students acquire communicative skills. By analyzing everyday life situations in class, students acquire the 1000 most frequently used words, the basic grammar and the most important language functions in Dutch. Course materials also include a lot of cultural information and provide extensive interactive practice in listening, reading, speaking and writing, both in class and in the language lab.
LEVEL 2:
Communication and the acquisition of communicative skills are crucial elements of this course, which is aimed at beginners who already have some knowledge of Dutch. The course starts with a brief review of basic grammar before introducing new material. About 1000 frequently used words relating to everyday life are presented in short and lively interactive chapters. The course provides extensive practice in listening, reading, speaking and writing both in class and in the language lab.
LEVEL 3:
At this level, elementary grammar and vocabulary will be revised and extended, simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, and describe certain given topics. You will also learn constructions which are typical of a more formal register: the passive (objective messages), the relative clauses (defining).
LEVEL 4:
The main aim of the course is to help students acquire communicative skills. Listening, reading, writing and speaking are practiced within five general and thematic units on topical issues (education, crime, politics, relationships and arts). New words, combinations of words and expressions are introduced in authentic language contexts and practiced in numerous vocabulary exercises and authentic reading, video, and audio material. The thematic units also include speaking and writing activities. Important grammatical items are reviewed, studied in greater depth and practice.
LEVEL 5:
This course aims to improve fluency, naturalness and accuracy. Grammatical chapters are revised and practised through a variety of exercises. Vocabulary is offered in texts and video material incorporating different aspects of the Low Countries� culture: commerce and economy, politics, technology, literature, arts, etc.
