About the Language
Afrikaans is mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia with smaller numbers of speakers in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Due to the emigration of many Afrikaners, there are an additional estimated 300,000 Afrikaans-speakers in the United Kingdom, with other substantial communities found in Brussels, Belgium; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Perth, Australia, Toronto, Canada; and Auckland, New Zealand.
Originated in Dutch in the 17th century, Afrikaans belongs to the West Germanic family of languages. Spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia, there are also speakers of Afrikaans in Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, UK, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Most of its vocabulary has been inherited from languages like Portuguese, Malay, Bantu and Khoisan languages.

Learners in this level will learn and understand simple sentences descriptions used in everyday life but only use in isolated words and expressions without real grammatical content. You will learn the basic grammar and the preparatory module of this course deals with the pronunciation.
At this level, short and simple conversation will be taught. For example, you can explain how to get somewhere or introduce yourself and you can ask for information. You most of all need practical knowledge of the language in daily life. The student masters certain example sentences and knows how to write them.
The students in this level will learn how to deal with elementary grammar and vocabulary will be revised and extended, simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, and describe certain given topics. You will also learn constructions which are typical of a more formal register: the passive (objective messages), the relative clauses (defining).
In this level, you will be able to interact with spontaneity and produce detailed texts and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. At end of the course you can write simple texts on familiar topics, enabling you to acquire useful reading strategies and you will also extend your practical vocabulary.
