About the Language
Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world and the third most spoken European language. Nearly 200 million people speak Portuguese, which is the official language of eight countries, comprising the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). Portuguese is a gateway to culture, travel and business on four continents. Portugal has a rich history and heritage as can be seen in its architecture. Portuguese wine, food and music are world famous and need no introduction. The Portuguese are also famous for their hospitality. Brazilians have a love of life apparent in Samba and Carnival. There is much to discover about Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries.
Why Learn Portuguese?
Portuguese is a Romance language and originated from Latin. Nearly 200 million speak Portuguese. It is interesting to know that many African and Asian countries have Portuguese as their official language. Portuguese is becoming more and more popular in Asia. The number of Portuguese speakers has grown particularly in Macau, China, due to the region’s increase in diplomatic and economic relations with Portugal and other Lusophone countries. In addition, there is a growing Portuguese-speaking population in the United States and many other countries as it is an uncommonly taught language, being fluent in it will probably serve you well when you look for a good income job. Cosmolingua offers courses in Portuguese as per the format of internationally recognized standardized tests which are administered by The Center for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE). Like the exams, our courses designed in accordance with Common European Framework and are divided in five levels, each testing oral and written skills through communicative task.
LEVEL A1 & A2:
The CIPLE corresponds to Level A1 & A2 of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe. The emphasis of this beginner class is on pronunciation, vocabulary building, basic grammar and basic conversation.
This course is for those students with little or no ability in the language. Introduction to basic listening, reading, speaking and writing skills will be addressed throughout the course. Building of the basic foundation provided in the introductory level, students will learn to introduce themselves and conduct simple conversations on a range of everyday subjects. he DEPLE corresponds to Level B1 of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe. This level continues to build up necessary grammar skills that will enable students to understand, read, write and translate sentences and paragraphs. It continues to build on Basic 2 by adding vocabulary and more complex sentences. This course is well-suited for students that have completed at least one semester of college-level Portuguese or the equivalent in a language institute. Students will learn to correctly use present, past and future tenses, along with more complex vocabulary and grammar. Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills will continue to be addressed throughout the course.
LEVEL B1 & B2:
The DIPLE corresponds to Level B2 of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe. This course starts with a conversational grammar review which presupposes a basic knowledge of Portuguese. Emphasis will be placed on using this grammar in conversation. This class is also meant for those students who have studied basic grammar but don’t feel as though they can adequately use it in conversation. Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills will be addressed throughout the course. Students will review vocabulary, such as nouns, adjectives, adverbs and names.
LEVEL C1:
The DAPLE corresponds to Level C1 of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe and recognizes an advanced level of knowledge of Portuguese. Students at this level need to have a solid basic foundation of the language and are looking to expand their knowledge of the more complex forms of Portuguese. Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills will be addressed throughout the course.
LEVEL C2:
This is the final conversational review grammar based course. The DUPLE corresponds to Level C2 of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe and is awarded for the top level of knowledge of Portuguese. This level will end covering all the grammatical structures needed to send the student into real-life situations speaking Portuguese and to get them ready for the more advanced courses. They will have full command of the language most important verb tenses. Students at this level are able to handle everyday conversations with ease but are eager to expand their cultural and idiomatic knowledge of Portuguese, as well as wrap-up their learning of advanced grammar. Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills will be addressed throughout the course.
Cosmolingua uses communicative approach of teaching. All four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) are practiced; the main emphasis is laid on speaking. Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work according to a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression.
